![]() She starts the book off right by introducing six key ways to reduce structural conflict, which she sees as the main reason why most new community failures seem to happen. Before reading this book, I thought I knew a thing or two about what it takes to get a group of people working together towards a common goal and make it happen, but man did I learn about all sorts of things I had previously not even considered which, if not addressed, would surely lead to failure. I don't know of any other book which so thoroughly details why 90 percent of community start ups fail and what you can do to be part of the successful 10 percent. This book goes into an incredible amount of detail about all sorts of aspects related to group interactions and communal buying power. If you have ever thought about living with a group of people or going in on a piece of property together, you pretty much need to read this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll post it here for my permie friends to enjoy Here is a book review I wrote up for this book over at my blog. ![]()

I just cannot help gushing over this book and thinking how I had missed reading this all these years for the book The Devotion of Suspect X was published in 2005.Įnding my review note with a point for you to ponder upon, how far would you go for someone you love but who does not give two cents about it? The corresponding line from the book – He held no aspirations of ever being anything to them. How would you react? No no, do not worry, no spoilers from my end. And then later, A feeling rose inside him, making him queasy, as though an elaborate formula he’d thought was perfect was now giving false results because of an unpredictable variable. ![]() ![]() This is a line picked from the book itself. Have you heard about P=NP problem? Basically, it asks whether it’s more difficult to think of the solution to a problem yourself or to ascertain if someone else’s answer to the same problem is correct. It feels like a long long time since I have read a book this perfect and which associates science and mathematics in a fictional murder mystery. ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to novels, Melissa has co-edited several anthologies, as well as published short fiction, manga, and prose non-fiction. Kurlansky shapes his story around the Basque fisherfolk who, beginning in the Middle Ages, developed the technique of drying and salting cod, and began pushing further and further into the North Atlantic in their search for ever-more abundant fisheries. Author Mark Kurlansky, who has gone on to write on subjects as varied as milk and onions, has an appealing ability to connect cultural trends to wider historical forces. ![]() ![]() Not only is Cod the biography of a world-changing fish, it is a work which changed the popular idea of what food history could be, inspiring many other single-subject explorations of the cultural and historical importance of a single food.Īlthough the book appears compact in its paperback edition it is nearly 300 pages long. ![]() ![]() ![]() For days, I played those sentences over in my mind, more than capable of painting a mental picture. The scene from a Christian fictionalization of Hosea took its place beside years of stored-up memories from hardcore pornography. For many of the adults and children trafficked in this trade, history stopped. For people of the African diaspora one of the most significant real history apocalyptic events was the Transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans. The apocalypse is conceptually ever in front of us, but speculative and near-future apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction operates at a level of understanding that the apocalypse has already happened, multiple times. Here Montgomery addresses the scope of the imagined post-apocalyptic world, from the Burn that destroys Toronto in Nalo Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in The Ring, to the layers of visioning forwards and backwards in Beyonce’s Lemonade. This slim volume is the latest in Professor Maxine Montgomery’s decades-long and seminal investigation into Black women’s apocalyptic writing. ![]() The Postapocalyptic Black Female Imagination by Maxine Lavon Montgomery ![]() ![]() She adopted Mitchell’s concept of “direct observation” and went to the children themselves to glean her text for A Hole Is to Dig. Ruth Krauss incorporated the “here and now” philosophy originated by educator and author Lucy Sprague Mitchell, founder of the Bank Street School, who maintained that “young children live in the ’here and now’ world around them, which they use as a laboratory for their explorations.” Krauss furthered Mitchell’s ideas by incorporating psychologist-pediatrician Arnold Gesell’s theories on the acquisition of language to create her own playful perspective on a young child’s reality. Their fortuitous be ginning resulted in the publication of A Hole is to Dig: A First Book of First Definitions (1951), the small innovative picture book that established Sendak as a formidable figure in children’s book illustration.ĭuring the early 1940s, Ruth Krauss was a member of the experimental Writers Laboratory at the Bank Street School in New York City, a program that fostered the talents of other great picture book writers, such as Margaret Wise Brown. Fall was whispering on the cool breeze, the faint scent of apples and fresh turf promising another exciting year for the NBU Rebels. The summer sun was high and bright in the sky, warm on my skin as I bounced across the North Boston University football field with my iPad in tow, checking off the list of players I needed to pull over for interviews after the first day of fall camp.
